Split Personality Hair

Split Personality Hair

There’s an issue that we as hairstylists come across almost every day. We’ve coined the name “split personality hair” – it’s when you struggle with oily roots and dry ends. There are many reasons why this may happen. Most commonly it’s due to the shampoo buildup on the scalp and brittle ends not being conditioned enough. Luckily, there are a couple of tricks we’ve learned throughout the years and here is where you can find your solution!

1. Primer Masque

Primer Masque

What do you do when you get something on your clothes? You apply a stain remover directly to the problem area before throwing it into the laundry!! Well, your hair is the same way! Did you know there is such a thing as a pre-shampoo masque?! Bumble and bumble makes an amazing pre-shampoo masque that we highly recommend at the salon. It’s called Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Balm to Oil Pre-Shampoo Masque. You apply it to your hair while it’s dry, inside the container it looks and feels like a thick balm, but once it touches your hair, it turns to oil. It will melt like butter in your hands and on your hair!

2. Two-Minute Brush Out

Two-Minute Brush Out

This is exactly what it sounds like! Before hopping into the shower, brush your hair out for two minutes straight! If you think about it, we normally do this to you as stylists. We do this for two reasons: 1. There are no knots or tangles and 2. To even the canvas! When you brush your hair, you’re breaking up the residue and oils on your scalp and evenly distributing it throughout your hair. Essentially you’re giving yourself an oil treatment with all your own natural oils! Pretty crazy and will definitely help moisturize those unruly ends.

3. Shampoo and Conditioner Cocktail

This is something I’m always encouraging my clients to do! When your hair has multiple problems to address – in this case, an oily scalp and dry ends – why not mix and match your shampoo and conditioner?! Choose a shampoo that will target your oily roots, one that is lightweight and designed to add volume! For the conditioner, choose something that’s extra hydrating. When you’re in the shower, give your roots extra attention with your shampoo and don’t fuss with the ends as much. Then as you move onto the conditioner, grab your hair as if you’re putting it up in a ponytail, focusing on all the hair from your ears down.

4. Dry Conditioner

Dry Conditioner

Sounds weird I know, but it’s a real thing. I promise! Bumble and bumble happens to make another product in the Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil line, called UV Protective Dry Oil Finishing Spray. This stuff is amazing. It’s the best after updos to add a whole bunch of shine, and it’s also great after you curl your hair. Spraying it on will give your hair moisture and a super soft touch!

5. Dandruff Shampoo

Dandruff Shampoo

Dry shampoo obsessions can lead to a dry, itchy scalp. I hate to admit it, but I am a sad dry shampoo addict myself. Using too much dry shampoo will cause a residual buildup on your scalp, and you’ll have to scrub even harder when you do shampoo your hair. I’m not saying to throw all your dry shampoo away, but maybe try using it more sparingly. Put your hair up on the third day rather than using a ton of powder!!
